In November 1974, a Bridgeport, Connecticut family—Jerry and Laura Goodin and their adopted daughter Marcia—experienced poltergeist activity so intense that crowds gathered outside their home and the local fire and police departments responded. The Goodins reported furniture flying across rooms, appliances turning on and off, and a constant drumming sound with no source.
Police officers who entered the home personally witnessed a heavy refrigerator lift off the floor and move across the kitchen. Firefighters documented furniture moving and a couch that threw the family cat. A detective signed a sworn statement attesting that he had witnessed furniture moving without human agency.
The crowds outside were so large that police were required to manage traffic. Parapsychologist Ed Wilkins investigated and concluded the phenomena were genuine. The family was temporarily relocated by the city due to the severity of the activity.
The case is notable for the number and quality of official witnesses including sworn law enforcement statements documenting paranormal events. Marcia, 10 years old, appeared to be the central focus. The activity diminished after the family was moved but resumed when they returned. The Bridgeport poltergeist represents one of the best-documented cases in American history by virtue of multiple official witnesses and signed statements.
