The St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida, completed in 1874, is one of the oldest surviving brick lighthouses in the United States and has been the site of persistent paranormal reports for over a century. The most frequently reported spirits are believed to be the children of lighthouse keeper Hezekiah Pity, who drowned in a construction accident nearby.
In 1873, several children — including daughters of lighthouse employees — were playing in a work cart used to haul supplies to the top of the structure. The cart broke free and rolled down the incline into the ocean. Several of the children drowned. Their deaths during the lighthouse's construction are believed to have left a strong impression on the location.
Visitors and investigators report hearing children's laughter, footsteps on the spiral staircase, and the sound of children playing in areas that are empty. Apparitions of young girls have been seen in various areas of the lighthouse and keeper's house. Lighthouse keepers historically reported shadows and sounds during overnight watches.
The TAPS team from the television series Ghost Hunters investigated the lighthouse and reported compelling evidence including the sound of a young girl's voice and objects moving. The lighthouse is now a museum and offers paranormal tours. It has been featured in multiple national paranormal programs and is considered one of the most credible haunted lighthouse cases in the US.
