On August 8, 2013, 26-year-old Brandon Lawson ran out of gas on a remote stretch of Highway 277 near Hazel Dell, Texas. He called his brother for help, then called 911. The 911 recording is deeply disturbing: Lawson speaks in a panicked, fragmented stream — "Please send an officer... I'm in the woods... someone's chasing... ran into the woods... I'm on the pipeline... I'm not in Abilene... pushed him... need help." The dispatcher could not make sense of the call. Brandon's truck was found with his wallet and phone inside, pulled off to the right shoulder. His brother arrived at the scene but could not find him. A driver on the road that night separately reported seeing a man matching Brandon's description with another, taller man, walking into a field off the highway. Despite searches by ground teams and law enforcement, no trace of Brandon Lawson — no body, no remains, no clothing — has ever been recovered from the surrounding fields, brush, and scrubland. The 911 audio has been analyzed repeatedly. What he was describing, and who he may have encountered in those dark Texas fields, has never been determined.
