Witness Account
In the early morning hours of April 4, 1986, nine-year-old Anthonette Cayedito answered a knock at the door of her family's home in Gallup, New Mexico. Neighbors heard her tell the visitor: "I don't know you." Shortly after, her family's phone rang. Someone called 911. A child's whispered voice said: "We need help." The call was traced to the Cayedito home. Officers arrived within minutes to find the front door open and Anthonette gone. Her mother and siblings were home and sleeping, and had heard nothing. The caller was never definitively identified. For six years, the case went cold. Then in 1990, a waitress at a restaurant in Pasadena, California received a handwritten note slipped to her by a girl who appeared to be a teenager. The note read: "I am Anthonette Cayedito and I was kidnapped. Please help me. Call the police. I am in Pasadena, CA." The waitress initially dismissed it, then contacted police. By the time authorities investigated, the girl was gone. No further confirmed contact has ever been made. Anthonette Cayedito has never been found.
