On November 11, 2014, a Chilean Navy helicopter conducting a routine patrol mission along the coast north of Santiago encountered and filmed an unidentified flying object for approximately nine minutes using a state-of-the-art infrared camera.
The object was not visible to the naked eye but was clearly defined on the FLIR camera. It flew at roughly the same speed as the helicopter—approximately 152 mph—and appeared to emit two streams of what may be hot gas or liquid from its underside before eventually disappearing into clouds.
The Chilean government's CEFAA (Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena) took the case seriously and spent two years consulting experts before releasing the footage in 2017. Aviation experts, including meteorologists, air traffic controllers, and naval officials, could not identify the object.
The General Director of Chile's Civil Aeronautical Authority stated the video constituted genuine evidence of an unidentified object with characteristics that could not be explained by any known technology. The Chilean case stands out for its institutional rigor and the quality of the sensor data involved.
