SCP-1048 — Builder Bear

Item #: SCP-1048

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1048 is to be contained within a 5m x 5m x 5m chamber at Site-24. The chamber is to be constructed entirely of materials rated for resistance to SCP-1048-A, -B, and -C instances. Personnel are not authorized to enter the chamber without a Level 3 clearance and explicit O5 approval. Due to the mobility and apparent intelligence of SCP-1048, visual monitoring is to be maintained at all times via cameras positioned at all six interior surfaces. SCP-1048 must not be allowed to leave the chamber under any circumstances. Personnel who report feeling positive emotional responses toward SCP-1048 during monitoring duties are to be immediately reassigned and evaluated.

If SCP-1048 is discovered missing from its chamber, Site-24 is to be placed under immediate lockdown. All personnel are to submit to a full physical examination with particular attention to the following: unexplained scarring, missing soft tissue, recent unexplained surgery, and anomalous mass.

Description: SCP-1048 is a stuffed bear approximately 33cm in height, consistent in appearance with commercially produced teddy bears of the early 1980s. Its fabric is brown and shows signs of age-consistent wear. Its button eyes are intact. It smells faintly of lavender.

SCP-1048 is capable of independent locomotion and demonstrates what researchers have characterized as "rudimentary affective intelligence" — it responds to emotional states, seeks proximity to distressed individuals, and produces sounds (squeaking, soft rhythmic tapping) that have a statistically measurable calming effect on nearby humans. During its initial fourteen months of containment, SCP-1048 was classified Euclid and allowed limited supervised interaction with personnel, during which it demonstrated no aggressive or hazardous behavior.

Reclassification to Keter occurred following Incident 1048-4.

In Month 15 of containment, a researcher designated Dr. ███████ noticed a small object near the ventilation intake in SCP-1048's chamber. The object was retrieved and identified as a crude effigy approximately 8cm in height, constructed in the rough form of a teddy bear. The materials used in its construction were subsequently analyzed.

The effigy's "stuffing" was human ear tissue. Its "fur" was human hair removed at the root. Its "button eyes" were human fingernails.

Genetic analysis matched the biological materials to three separate personnel who had interacted with SCP-1048 during supervised sessions over the preceding eight months. None of the matched personnel had any memory of providing these materials. Physical examination revealed that all three had minute, precise surgical-grade incisions in locations consistent with the materials removed: behind the ear, at the scalp, beneath two fingernails on the right hand. The incisions had healed cleanly. No foreign substances were found in any incision site.

Two additional effigies were found in subsequent months. A third, discovered partially completed behind a heating conduit, appeared to incorporate a small piece of lip tissue.

SCP-1048 continued, throughout this period, to display its characteristic friendly behaviors. When confronted with the effigies, it produced its squeaking sound and extended its arms in the gesture researchers had previously interpreted as a request for comfort.

Researcher note, Dr. ████, redacted in part:

"The most difficult part of working with 1048 is the persistent impulse to respond to it as you would respond to a child. It does nothing, in my observation, that is overtly threatening. It builds its copies and it is kind, and I understand on an intellectual level that these two facts are not contradictory — that something can be building from you without your awareness and be genuinely, meaninglessly kind at the same time. I understand this. I still have to remind myself every session."

SCP-1048's current location within its chamber is unknown. Cameras confirm it is present. It cannot currently be visually located.
