SCP-407 — The Song of Genesis

Item #: SCP-407

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-407 is stored on a single analog reel-to-reel tape in a soundproofed, hermetically sealed chamber at Site-██. The chamber must be checked weekly for any signs of biological growth. Any organic material found within the chamber that was not present in the previous inspection is to be incinerated immediately. Do not attempt to identify it before incineration.

Playback of SCP-407 in any form is prohibited without explicit authorization from two O5 members. All previous testing has been suspended pending review. See Addendum 407-C.

Description: SCP-407 is an audio recording of unknown origin, duration approximately 4 minutes and 17 seconds. The music is melodic and cannot be attributed to any identified composer, tradition, or culture. Multiple ethnomusicologists have reviewed the recording under strictly controlled conditions (hearing protection, isolated playback into headphones, limited duration exposure) and have variously described it as "pre-linguistic," "structurally impossible," and "something that predates the concept of music."

When played at any volume audible to living organisms, SCP-407 induces rapid and uncontrolled biological mutation in all affected organisms. Plant tissue in the vicinity grows at rates up to 3,000% of baseline and exhibits novel structures with no evolutionary precedent. Animal tissue undergoes more complex transformation — cellular replication accelerates, body plans shift, organs migrate or multiply, new structures emerge from existing tissue with apparent purposefulness.

The transformations are not random. This is the finding that has prompted the most internal debate. The mutations appear to be directional — as if the recording is providing instructions. Instructions toward what end has not been determined.

Addendum 407-C — Incident Report:

Test 407-7 was conducted on ██/██/20██ with three D-class personnel in a prepared biological testing chamber. SCP-407 was played through speakers for its full duration.

The recording produced results consistent with prior tests through the 2-minute mark. At 2:14, the rate of transformation exceeded all prior observations. At 3:41, visual contact with all three subjects was lost due to the volume and density of biological material that had grown within the chamber.

At the conclusion of the recording, the chamber was silent for approximately 11 minutes.

Then something knocked on the chamber door from the inside.

The decision was made not to open the door. The chamber was sealed at O5 authorization and has not been reopened. Audio monitoring of the chamber has been maintained. For the first six days following the test, irregular sounds were recorded: movement, breathing patterns that do not match any catalogued organism, and on the fourth day, something that the audio analyst described as "an attempt at language."

The sounds ceased on day seven.

The chamber remains sealed. The tape remains in containment. The song, whatever it is offering to transform us into, has not been played since.

We do not know what knocked on the door. We do not know if it is still in there.

We have decided, for now, not to find out.
