The Rake

During the summer of 2003, my family began noticing something watching us from the tree line at the edge of our property.

It happened first to my husband. He woke me at around 2 AM gripping my arm, convinced something was crouching at the foot of our bed. I saw nothing. He described it as pale, hunched, and human-shaped — but wrong. Too long in the limbs. Moving on all fours but not like an animal.

Over the following weeks, our son began drawing the same figure repeatedly. He called it his friend. He would not explain further.

In August, I woke to find our daughter crying in her room. She told me the thing had been sitting at the foot of her bed, watching her for a very long time. When she'd spoken to it, it had tilted its head — she described the sound as like snapping branches — and disappeared.

That same night, my husband found our son outside on the lawn at 3 AM, talking to the tree line. He would not say who he was talking to. He has never spoken about it since.

I have since searched through archives of similar accounts. In northeastern US alone, documented encounters span from the early 1800s through to 2006. A journal entry from 1964 reads: "Saw it again at the stream. It did not run. It watched. I cannot describe the face. My pencil refused to draw it."

A 2006 entry from a private account: "It came in through the window. Sat on the edge of my bed. When I screamed it looked at me with something like recognition, then left the way it came. I do not believe it means harm. I believe it is simply curious. This thought is worse, somehow, than the alternative."

We moved in September. The new owners of our home reported similar events six months later. I believe it is territorial. I believe it is still there.

I leave this account here because I have found three other people with identical experiences, across three different states, over a span of forty years. The description is always the same: pale, hairless, the joints bending at wrong angles, the face difficult to remember.

It does not speak. But it watches.

And sometimes, I think it comes with us.
