Who Was Phone?

Author's note: "Who Was Phone" is one of the foundational texts of internet horror — not because it's frightening but because it is the perfect distillation of creepypasta structure taken to its logical, absurd extreme. It is included here as a cultural document.

So ur with ur honey and yur making out wen the phone rings. U anser it and the vioce is "wut r u doing wit my daughter?"

U tell ur girl and she say "my dad is ded".

THEN WHO WAS PHONE?

The story, posted anonymously on 4chan circa 2006, parodies the "twist reveal" format of horror folklore — specifically the structure of campfire stories like "The Hook" where the terror arrives in the final line. By reducing that structure to its absolute minimum and executing it with deliberate grammatical chaos, the original poster created something that has been referenced, remixed, and quoted for nearly two decades.

The question "THEN WHO WAS PHONE?" became a template — applied to any situation where a dramatic reveal creates an impossible logical contradiction. It is the internet's shorthand for the entire genre's central device.

It is also, in its own way, a perfect horror story: short, efficient, and ending with a question that has no satisfying answer. The reason it works, even as a joke, is because the question is genuinely unanswerable. The phone rang. Someone was on it. The someone should not have been able to be.

Then who was phone.

That's the whole thing. That's all horror, really, compressed into four words.
