The Black Monk of Pontefract case began in 1966 at 30 East Drive in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England and continued intermittently for over a decade. The case is notable for the extreme violence of the phenomena, which included a green foam-like substance seeping from the walls, a teenage girl being dragged up the stairs by her throat, and the materialization of a figure in a black monk's habit.
The Pritchard family experienced pools of water forming on dry floors, objects being thrown through the house with force, furniture moving, and pictures being slashed. Investigators who visited, including psychical researcher Tom Cuniffe, witnessed phenomena directly.
The most violent events involved 15-year-old Diane Pritchard, who was dragged up a flight of stairs by an unseen force while family members watched in horror. A noose appeared around her neck on one occasion. The entity was identified by the family as the ghost of a Cluniac monk who had been executed at Pontefract's gallows in the 16th century following a conviction for the rape and murder of a young girl.
The case has attracted renewed interest since the house began offering overnight stays for paranormal investigators in the 2010s. Investigators consistently report being physically touched, having objects thrown at them, and experiencing electrical interference. The house has become one of the most frequently investigated residential poltergeist locations in Europe.
