Beginning in 1938, a family in Thornton Heath, Surrey (now part of Greater London), experienced sustained poltergeist activity for several years that was documented by multiple investigators including a medical doctor, who witnessed phenomena personally. The case involved a wide range of classic poltergeist manifestations including flying objects, sounds, and apparent apports.
The disturbances included heavy furniture moving, objects flying through the air and striking family members, unexplained sounds of banging and sawing, and the appearance of objects that had not been in the house. The activity was reportedly most intense in the presence of a woman in the household, consistent with patterns observed in other poltergeist cases.
Harry Price, the prominent British psychical researcher, investigated the case with Dr. H.J. Lardner, a physician. During their investigation, both men reported witnessing objects move in plain view without any normal cause. Objects that were locked away were found to have moved or disappeared. Price documented the case in detail in his writings.
The Thornton Heath case was investigated multiple times over several years and the phenomena were confirmed by multiple independent witnesses of professional standing. It remains one of the better-documented London-area poltergeist cases of the early 20th century and is regularly cited in parapsychological literature as an example of well-witnessed poltergeist activity.
