The Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, is a Grade II listed building dating to around 1145 AD, built on a site with human habitation stretching back 5,000 years. The site is described by its longtime owner and investigators as one of the most demonically active locations in England.
The land is said to lie at the intersection of two ley lines and to have been used for pagan rituals and human sacrifice. A site of a pagan burial ground and sacrificial site is believed to underlie the building. When the owner, John Humphries, moved into the inn in 1968, he claimed to be dragged from his bed by an invisible force on his first night.
Humphreys spent decades documenting the inn's phenomena, which include apparitions of a shepherd, a Roman centurion, and a succubus-type entity. Children's skeletons and ritualistic artifacts were reportedly found beneath the hearth, along with the remains of what appeared to be sacrificial victims with daggers still embedded in the bones.
Paranormal investigators from around the world have visited the Ancient Ram Inn and reported violent physical attacks, electronic equipment failures, and being thrown across rooms. The Bishop's Room is considered particularly active. John Humphries opened the inn to investigators until his death in 2017. The property's combination of historical depth and claimed activity has made it a destination for paranormal researchers.
