The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California is one of the most architecturally bizarre structures in the United States — a sprawling 160-room Victorian mansion built continuously for 38 years, featuring staircases that lead to ceilings, doors that open onto walls, and windows overlooking other rooms rather than the outdoors.
Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, began construction in 1884 and, according to legend, was instructed by a medium to build without stopping in order to appease the spirits of those killed by Winchester firearms. Whether or not this story is literally accurate, Winchester oversaw constant construction until her death in 1922.
The resulting mansion contains 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 fireplaces, and staircases going nowhere — a labyrinthine structure that some have interpreted as deliberately designed to confuse spirits. Winchester herself reportedly conducted seances in a Blue Room and communicated with entities she believed guided the construction.
Guests and staff at the house have reported cold spots, orbs of light, unexplained sounds including the sound of a piano playing from an empty room, and apparitions of workers and of Mrs. Winchester herself. Several rooms are considered particularly active. The house is now a popular tourist destination and has been the subject of multiple paranormal investigations and a feature film.
