The Château de Brissac in Maine-et-Loire, France — the tallest castle in France at seven stories — is haunted by one of the most famous and visually striking apparitions in European paranormal lore. Known as the Green Lady, or La Dame Verte, the ghost is believed to be Charlotte de Brézé, the illegitimate daughter of King Charles VII, who was discovered in flagrante with her lover by her husband and murdered in the castle in the 15th century. Charlotte was reportedly stabbed to death along with her lover in what is now known as the Tower of the Crime. The Green Lady appears wearing a green dress and is distinctive for her horrifying appearance — witnesses report that instead of eyes and a nose, her face shows the gaping holes of a decomposed corpse. She reportedly moans in the halls and appears particularly in a specific tower room. The castle is still privately owned and inhabited by the Cossé-Brissac family, who have occupied it for centuries. Guests of the resident duke have reported encountering the Green Lady in the night and hearing disembodied moaning. The chapel of the castle reportedly shows the Green Lady's image in its windows. The Château de Brissac is open to visitors and offers overnight stays. Staff and visitors have consistently reported encounters with the apparition over many decades. The combination of documented historical murder and persistent apparition reports makes it one of the most credible haunted castle cases in France.
