FULL ACCOUNT
On July 30, 1975, James R. Hoffa — the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and one of the most powerful labor leaders in American history — was last seen walking into the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. He was 62 years old. He was never seen again. Hoffa had served as Teamsters president from 1957 to 1971, during which time he built the union into the largest in America while maintaining close ties to organized crime. He was convicted of jury tampering and fraud in 1964 and served four years in federal prison before receiving a pardon from President Nixon in 1971. He was reportedly planning a return to Teamsters leadership — a prospect that concerned both mob figures who preferred the current leadership and federal authorities. Hoffa reportedly told his wife he was meeting with two Mafia figures at the restaurant. When he called home to say his appointment was late, those were his last known words. Multiple organized crime figures were investigated as suspects, but no one was ever charged. The FBI's "HOFFEX" investigation produced evidence of mob involvement but not enough for prosecution. Hoffa's remains have never been found despite numerous tips, excavations, and deathbed confessions over the decades. Theories about where he was buried range from a New Jersey landfill to the foundations of Giants Stadium to various Michigan properties. In 2024, new witnesses claimed Hoffa was buried under a specific Michigan driveway, but FBI excavation found nothing conclusive.
