FULL ACCOUNT
In 1977, the island of Colares in the state of Pará, Brazil experienced a prolonged wave of UFO encounters in which residents reported being struck by beams of light from low-flying objects, resulting in burns, puncture marks, and anemia-like symptoms. The Brazilian Air Force launched a secret investigation called Operation Prato in response.
Local fishermen and farmers described objects that flew close to the ground and directed powerful beams of light at people. Those struck by the beams reported being paralyzed, burned, and left with circular marks resembling puncture wounds on their skin. Several people required hospitalization. At least two deaths were attributed to the encounters, though this is disputed.
Operation Prato, commanded by Captain Uyrangê Hollanda, documented hundreds of sightings over several months using photographs, film, and witness testimony. The Air Force files included photographs and detailed medical reports. Hollanda gave an extensive interview about the investigation before his death in 1997, confirming that the phenomena were real and that the Brazilian government had documented and then classified the evidence.
The Operation Prato files were partially declassified in the 1990s under pressure from Brazilian UFO researchers. They confirmed systematic medical documentation of injuries consistent with radiation exposure. The Colares incident is considered one of the most significant and well-documented mass contact events in the history of UAP research.
