David Berkowitz terrorized New York City in 1976 and 1977, shooting 13 people — killing six and wounding seven — in a series of seemingly random attacks on young women and couples. He taunted police and the media with a series of bizarre letters signed "Son of Sam," causing widespread panic and one of the largest manhunts in NYPD history. Berkowitz was ultimately caught through a parking ticket issued near one of the crime scenes. He pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to six consecutive 25-years-to-life terms, later claiming demonic possession had compelled the attacks.
