FULL ACCOUNT
On October 28, 2007, 23-year-old Stacy Peterson vanished from her home in Bolingbrook, Illinois. She had four children and had recently spoken to an attorney about divorce. Her husband, Sergeant Drew Peterson of the Bolingbrook Police Department, told investigators she had left him for another man. The case quickly drew national attention when investigators looked into the 2004 death of Drew's third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose death had originally been ruled accidental drowning in her bathtub. After Stacy disappeared, Savio's body was exhumed and her death was reclassified as murder. A witness — Peterson's stepbrother — provided a sworn affidavit stating that on the night Stacy vanished, Drew asked him to help move a large blue plastic barrel from the house. The barrel felt warm, and contained something heavy. Drew Peterson was convicted in 2012 of Kathleen Savio's murder and sentenced to 38 years. A separate charge of soliciting murder was also filed. Stacy Peterson has never been found. Her body has never been recovered. The blue barrel was never located.
