On January 8, 2008, dozens of residents of Stephenville, Texas reported seeing a large, silent object with bright lights moving through the night sky. A local pilot and business owner, Steve Allen, estimated the craft was about a mile long and half a mile wide and traveled at about 3,000 mph.
The initial military response denied any aircraft were operating in the area. However, MUFON obtained FAA radar data through a FOIA request showing that the object had been tracked heading directly toward restricted airspace over President George W. Bush's Crawford Ranch, with military F-16s in pursuit.
The military later reversed its initial statement and acknowledged that F-16s were operating in the area that night. The radar data showed an object moving at over 2,100 mph—far beyond the capability of conventional aircraft.
The case is notable for the radar evidence and the military's initial denial followed by acknowledgment, suggesting active tracking of an unknown object in controlled airspace. Witnesses ranged from farmers to law enforcement and the case received extensive national news coverage.
