SCP-1000 — Bigfoot

Item #: SCP-1000

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Knowledge of SCP-1000's true nature, history, and current status is restricted to Level 4/1000 personnel and above. The Foundation maintains an extensive public disinformation operation centered on the "Bigfoot" and "Sasquatch" cultural myths, designed to discredit any report of SCP-1000 contact as folklore. Physical evidence of SCP-1000 presence, including tracks, hair samples, and photographic evidence, is to be recovered, suppressed, or credibly debunked as quickly as possible.

Direct contact with SCP-1000 instances is strictly prohibited except by authorized Mobile Task Force personnel. Lethal force is not authorized. SCP-1000 instances are to be treated with the protocols applicable to a sapient species.

This designation is not made lightly.

Description: SCP-1000 is the common name for a species of large, bipedal hominid primates distributed across North America, Central Asia, and Northern Europe. They are highly intelligent, demonstrating tool use, complex communication, and evidence of sustained cultural transmission across generations. They are physically robust, averaging 2.4 meters in height and 280 kilograms. They are primarily nocturnal, primarily solitary, and extraordinarily effective at avoiding human observation.

What the public understands as Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, and cognate folklore entities are SCP-1000.

What the public does not know — what almost no one outside Level 4/1000 clearance knows — is the history contained in Addendum 1000-A.

Addendum 1000-A: [LEVEL 4/1000 CLEARANCE REQUIRED]

Archaeological and genetic evidence, recovered and analyzed by Foundation research teams over a period of decades, indicates the following:

Approximately 15,000 years ago, SCP-1000 was the dominant intelligent species on Earth. They maintained a civilization characterized by what Foundation anthropologists describe as high-complexity oral culture, sophisticated ecological management, and the use of an anomalous technology that interfaced directly with biological and ecological systems. They did not build in stone or metal. Their works were largely organic, and did not survive.

They were not conquered by humanity. They were not killed in direct conflict. They were the victims of a targeted, species-level cognitive attack — a memetic weapon that spread through their population and systematically degraded their higher cognitive functions over the course of several generations. Evidence suggests the weapon was deployed deliberately.

Evidence further suggests the SCP Foundation — or a predecessor organization operating under a different name — deployed it.

The reason is [DATA EXPUNGED] by O5 order. What is accessible at Level 4/1000 is the following summary statement, attributed to O5-3, dated ████:

"The decision was made in a context we no longer have access to, by people whose reasoning we cannot fully reconstruct. The outcome we were preventing, if the records are accurate, justified the action taken. This does not make the action acceptable. We have made our peace with the distinction."

SCP-1000 instances in the wild retain approximately 15-18% of their ancestral cognitive capacity. Some individuals test higher. Foundation researchers who have had authorized contact report that these higher-functioning individuals appear to know. Not specifically — they have no oral history of the event, which was effective at erasing exactly that. But they look at Foundation personnel with an expression that researchers have described, consistently and independently, as: recognition.

They know something was taken from them. They do not know what, or by whom, or why.

The Foundation knows. The Foundation maintains the myth of Bigfoot to ensure they remain folklore.

Secure. Contain. Protect.

We contain what we cannot undo.
