SCP-999 — The Tickle Monster

Item #: SCP-999
Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-999 is to be contained in a large, open habitat with ample toys, activities, and regular enrichment. Interaction with Foundation personnel is permitted and encouraged for both SCP-999's wellbeing and its therapeutic use among staff.

Description: SCP-999 appears to be a large, amorphous, translucent orange mass with a soft, gelatinous consistency. It smells of fresh brownies and citrus. It weighs approximately 54 kg, though this varies. It cannot be harmed by conventional means and shows no aggressive tendencies of any kind.

SCP-999 is playful, curious, and appears to genuinely enjoy the company of humans. It will approach personnel, produce a chirping vocalization, and attempt to engage them in play. It finds particular joy in being pet and in watching cartoons.

Physical contact with SCP-999 produces an immediate and powerful sensation of happiness in the person touched. Subjects describe relief from anxiety, depression, and physical pain. The effect persists for several hours after contact and subjects report improved mood for up to 24 hours. No negative side effects have been documented in any test. Prolonged or repeated exposure shows no tolerance buildup and no adverse effects.

SCP-999 has been used therapeutically with Foundation staff suffering from trauma, burnout, and conditions induced by exposure to other SCP objects. Success rates are reported as high. Several personnel have listed interaction with SCP-999 as the primary reason they remain with the Foundation.

SCP-999 is notably distressed when it perceives that a person near it is suffering. It will attempt to comfort them. This instinct cannot be suppressed.

In all respects, SCP-999 is a genuinely good creature. The Foundation keeps it because it found it and because what it does is unusual and because the world is full of SCP-682s, and something has to be SCP-999.
