FULL ACCOUNT
Dorothea Puente operated a boarding house in Sacramento, California, where she murdered at least nine of her elderly and mentally disabled tenants between 1982 and 1988, cashing their Social Security checks. Suspicions arose when social workers noticed the frequent disappearance of boarders, and police excavated her yard in November 1988 after a tenant went missing. Seven bodies were found buried on the property. Puente fled to Los Angeles during the excavation but was captured. She was convicted of three murders in 1993 and sentenced to life imprisonment, dying behind bars in 2011.
