Item #: SCP-939
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Instances of SCP-939 are to be contained in individual reinforced concrete cells measuring no less than 10 meters by 10 meters by 4 meters tall, with no external lighting. Cells must maintain a temperature of 10°C (50°F) to minimize activity levels. Cells are to be fitted with anesthetic gas delivery systems capable of full-cell saturation within 30 seconds in the event of a containment breach.
Personnel assigned to SCP-939 containment must wear hermetically sealed suits at all times when within 30 meters of any cell. Earplugs rated at minimum 33 dB noise reduction are mandatory. No personnel are to respond to any vocalization from within SCP-939 containment cells regardless of content or apparent source.
Standing orders: if you hear your name spoken from within an SCP-939 cell, do not answer.
Description: SCP-939 are endothermic pack predators averaging 2.2 meters in length from snout to tail-tip, massing approximately 250 kilograms. Their external appearance is superficially canine but with numerous significant differences: the skin is a deep crimson and entirely hairless, the eyes are vestigial and non-functional, and the jaw opens to approximately 107 degrees, wider than the skull's apparent width due to a bifurcated mandible mechanism unique to this species.
SCP-939 are functionally blind. They navigate and hunt entirely by sound and by chemoreception, detecting prey by respiratory activity at ranges up to 15 meters in still air.
Their primary hunting mechanism is vocalization. SCP-939 are capable of perfectly replicating any sound they have previously heard, with particular specialization in human voices. The mimicry is not merely phonetic — instances of SCP-939 replicate not just the voice but the content of previously heard speech, producing new sentences in the voices of individuals it has encountered. The speech produced demonstrates functional understanding of human language sufficient to hold short conversations.
The speech produced by SCP-939 instances is drawn from the voices and linguistic patterns of prior victims.
Addendum 939-A: Incident Log
During a containment breach at Site-██ on ██/██/20██, SCP-939-17 breached its cell and traveled approximately 340 meters through the facility before recontainment. During this period, it spoke continuously. Audio recovered from hallway cameras recorded the following:
"[Voice of Dr. ████████, deceased]" — "It's okay. Stay where you are. Help is coming."
"[Voice of Junior Researcher ██████, deceased]" — "I can hear you breathing. Come out. It's over."
"[Voice of unknown individual, not identified from Foundation records]" — "I heard you crying. I heard you crying for a long time. I have it now. I kept it. I keep all of them."
Three personnel responded to SCP-939-17's vocalizations during the breach. None survived.
Addendum 939-B: Research Note
SCP-939 do not need to consume their victims to acquire their voices. Proximity during an emotional or extreme experience appears sufficient. This means that instances of SCP-939 that have been in captivity for extended periods have acquired the voices of containment staff — staff who are, in many cases, still living.
Containment personnel have reported hearing their own voice emerge from SCP-939 cells, speaking sentences they have never said.
Some have found the sentences disturbingly accurate.
They are remembering something that hasn't happened yet.
