Item #: SCP-507
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-507 is to be housed in a comfortable residential suite at Site-19. He is permitted to decorate his room, request recreational materials within reason, and move freely within the approved residential zone. He is to be accompanied by at least one Foundation staff member at all times in non-residential areas, not for security reasons but because he finds the company useful.
When SCP-507 displays pre-shift indicators (described below), he is to be escorted to a designated Shift Room equipped with recording equipment, a return beacon, and a supply pack containing: one (1) week's rations, one (1) emergency medical kit, two (2) notebooks and writing materials, one (1) compass, and one (1) letter addressed to whatever sapient entity SCP-507 may encounter, briefly explaining his situation and requesting his safe return.
Personnel are reminded that SCP-507 has no control over when he shifts, where he goes, or how long he remains. Expressing frustration about the unpredictability of his ability to SCP-507 is prohibited. He is already frustrated.
Description: SCP-507 is a 26-year-old Caucasian male, 1.78 meters tall, medium build, with an expression that his intake form describes as "the look of a man who has been through a lot and is handling it." He has been in Foundation custody for ████ years, initially brought in voluntarily after his third involuntary dimensional shift deposited him in a Foundation testing area.
SCP-507's anomalous property is involuntary paratemporal and paracausal displacement, colloquially: he is occasionally yanked out of baseline reality and deposited in an alternate dimension, where he remains for a period ranging from 48 hours to three weeks, after which he is returned to the location from which he departed, at the exact moment he left (with some small variance).
He does not choose to go. He does not choose when to return. He has no control over the destination.
Pre-shift indicators include: a persistent metallic smell noticeable only to SCP-507, a sensation he describes as "the feeling that the floor is slightly uncertain," and an increasing translucency visible to others in dim lighting.
Addendum 507-A: Selected Shift Reports (SCP-507's own words, lightly edited for length)
Shift #34: "Arrived in what appeared to be a normal Earth city, except all the architecture was built facing inward — all windows and doors faced the center of the building, away from the street. Nobody would explain why. Stayed for four days. Nice people. Very unwilling to discuss the outside of buildings."
Shift #47: "The dimension I arrived in appeared to be empty. Just the Earth, geologically normal, no biosphere. I walked around for six days. On the seventh day I realized the sky was a different color each morning — not weather variation, a fundamentally different sky, like each day was a different version of the same empty world. I left before I could work out the pattern. I wish I'd stayed."
Shift #52: "I am not going to write down what was there. I'm going to say that I was only there for two hours before I came back and that I am fine and would appreciate it if we could move on."
Shift #61: "There was a version of me there. He had been trapped for what appeared to be years. He was not okay. I couldn't bring him back with me. I left him my supply pack. I don't know if that helped. I think about it."
Researcher Note: SCP-507 is, by any reasonable measure, handling his situation with remarkable equanimity. When asked how he does it, he shrugs and says: "There's always something interesting. And I always come back."
He has come back sixty-seven times. We expect him again.
