Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, approximately 40 minutes after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, en route to Beijing with 239 people on board. Radar and satellite data indicated the plane deviated sharply from its course and flew for several more hours into the southern Indian Ocean. Despite the largest and most expensive aviation search in history, the main wreckage has never been found, though confirmed debris pieces later washed ashore on Indian Ocean islands and the African coast. The cause of the disappearance has never been officially determined.
