FULL ACCOUNT
Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared on December 17, 1967, while swimming at Cheviot Beach in Victoria in rough sea conditions, and his body was never recovered. The disappearance triggered one of the largest sea and air searches in Australian history at that time, yet no trace of Holt was found. While the official conclusion is that he drowned, his disappearance spawned persistent conspiracy theories including that he was a Chinese spy extracted by submarine. An Australian coroner's inquest in 2005 concluded he most likely drowned. Harold Holt Swimming Centre in Melbourne was named in his honour.
