Aileen Wuornos was an American serial killer who shot and killed seven men along Florida highways between 1989 and 1990, claiming the killings were in self-defense against attempted rape. Working as a prostitute, she solicited rides from male motorists and shot her victims with a .22-caliber pistol. She was arrested in January 1991 and subsequently convicted of six of the seven murders, receiving six death sentences. Wuornos was executed by lethal injection in October 2002, becoming one of the most notorious female serial killers in American history.
