Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo was a Soviet serial killer who committed the sexual assault, murder, and mutilation of at least 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in southern Russia. He worked as a schoolteacher and company official while carrying out his crimes, luring victims to wooded areas near train stations. A wrongly convicted man was executed for one of Chikatilo's early murders. He was arrested in November 1990 after a police stakeout at a railway station. Chikatilo confessed to 56 murders, was convicted of 52, and was executed by a single gunshot to the back of the head in February 1994.
