FULL ACCOUNT
Emanuela Orlandi, the 15-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee, disappeared on June 22, 1983, in Rome, after leaving music school. Her disappearance was linked in mysterious anonymous calls to the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, with kidnappers demanding the release of shooter Mehmet Ali Ağca. No ransom exchange ever occurred, and Emanuela was never found. The Vatican opened its own investigation in 2018, and in 2023 investigators searched a Vatican cemetery based on a tip, finding bones but not Emanuela's remains. The case remains unsolved and is subject to ongoing Italian judicial proceedings.
