FULL ACCOUNT
On August 17, 1980, nine-week-old Azaria Chamberlain disappeared from a campsite at Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Australia's Northern Territory. Her mother Lindy claimed a dingo took the baby from the tent. Lindy Chamberlain was convicted of murder in 1982 and served three years before being released after a portion of Azaria's clothing was found near a dingo den in 1986. Multiple inquests followed over the decades, and in 2012 an inquest finally officially recorded that Azaria died as a result of being taken by a dingo — fully vindicating the Chamberlains after 32 years. The case had profound effects on Australian media and justice.
